Julian Agyeman responds to questions at the Longy School on May 11.

On Sunday, May 11, Dr. Julian Agyeman was the featured speaker at our meeting. This occasion marked the 1st annual Edward and Ruth Roseland Memorial Lecture, in honor of the eponymous lifetime Ethical Society members. Dr. Agyeman is a colleague of the Roseland’s son, Mark Roseland, who endowed the event.

Dr. Agyeman presented a very compelling talk on the linkage between sustainability, social justice, and inequality. Weaving together a number of themes ranging from evironmental justice, to economic opportunity, to urban planning, to food policy and climate change, he drew an alarming yet hopeful picture of future decades. One of his important points was that we have the technology to address most of the world’s great problems, but it is incumbent on all of us as citizens to engage politically to bring about the changes that are needed.
